NCAT Mission
Exploring the intersections among digital technologies and the arts
The Newell Center for Arts Technology exists to enhance the arts curricula
and to foster a variety of collaborative, interdisciplinary activities.
In the service of this mission, it provides space, support, and resources
for faculty, staff, and students pursuing projects directly tied to the arts
curricula.
NCAT Facilities
The NCAT occupies a portion of two floors in the Noble
Center on the St. Lawrence Campus. It is comprised of several spaces, including
an electronic classroom, a lab, two small project studios, and office and
workroom spaces. A second, seminar-sized electronic classroom is planned
for a later phase of the building's renovation. Take
the tour.
Equipment and support is provided for digital image acquisition,
creation, and manipulation; color and large format printing; digital video
editing and production; DVD authoring; audio editing and mixing; CD authoring;
multimedia production; and web design. NCAT facilities are currently
open to students, faculty and staff in arts courses, and to others by special
arrangement with the NCAT Director. Use of the project studios is further
restricted to advanced students, and access is granted on a semester basis.
The main lab (NC003) is open Sunday through Thursday from
4:00pm till midnight; the lab contains a HelpDesk staffed by students to
assist users. Adjacent to the NCAT is the Performance & Communication
Arts department's Presentation Studio (NC002), where students can rehearse
and videotape oral presentations. This facility is supported by the NCAT,
but access privileges are granted by the P&CA faculty.
NCAT Advisory Board
The NCAT Advisory Board is comprised of one faculty or
staff member from each of the following departments or programs: Fine Arts,
Music, Performance & Communication Arts, the Brush Art Gallery, and
Film Studies. The board works with the NCAT staff to guide the development
of the NCAT and its program, and to administer its grant programs.
